Hal Wilson, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor, Coaching
Georgia Southern University

About Hal:

Dr. Hal Wilson has served in the #2 ranked online master's degree in coaching as an Assistant Professor of Coaching Education at Georgia Southern University since 2014. USA Basketball, the US Soccer Foundation, and the National Forum on Character Education are among the groups to invite Wilson to speak at their events. A strong believer in service, Wilson serves on the Editorial Board of The International Journal of Kinesiology in Higher Education, as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for foster children in the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit, and as the Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Bulloch Academy. He is passionate about the positive potential of sports and seeks to encourage and empower coaches and administrators to positively impact their players through holistic, athlete-centered coaching and their local communities through service and engagement.

In 2011, Wilson created CoachingBasketballWisely.com as a resource to share ideas and give back to the game. In response to recent tragedies around the nation involving law enforcement and, primarily, people of color, Wilson created the "Hoops with Heroes" program partnering middle school aged youth-at-risk with local law enforcement officers to build positive relationships through basketball.

Dr. Wilson earned his PhD in Kinesiology and Sport Studies from the University of Tennessee while working with the renowned Center for Sport, Peace, and Society. The ten years prior to that, Wilson was a high school teacher and head varsity boys basketball coach in Georgia, taking two different programs to their first state playoff appearance in school history, setting a school record for wins at both, raising each school's team GPA, and performing numerous team community service projects.

From 1999-2002, Wilson was a graduate assistant for the University of Tennessee men's basketball program, winning UT's first SEC Championship in 18 years, reaching back-to-back NCAA tournaments, and earning a national ranking as high as #4. Prior to that, while teaching high school and coaching football and basketball in western NC from 1997-1999, Wilson's boys basketball team won the school's first sectional championship, set a school record for wins, and earned a #1 ranking in all classifications by The Charlotte Observer.

From 1994-1997 Wilson served a manager, a walk-on player, and as an undergraduate assistant at UNC Wilmington, winning the school's first CAA regular season title in 1997. His first coaching experience came in 1995 through an inner-city basketball league sponsored by the Boys Scouts of America with support from the Wilmington Police Department and the Wilmington Public Housing Authority.
