Coach Slay will share how he considers himself an average man who through the help of others, his own drive and willingness to do what others would not do, has been able to accomplish many things throughout his 60+ years as an educator. The audience will feel Coach Slay's positive approach to life and be captured by his quest to be a centenarian.
7:00 PM: The Master Skill
A master teacher, Coach Slay will share with coaches and aspiring coaches the master skill of focused listening. The audience will learn how this skill can lead to self-improvement and how coaches can teach focused listening to their team.

About Coach Slay:
In the state of Kanas, Ron Slaymaker (i.e. Coach Slay) is a familiar name in education and the sport of basketball. In a career that spans over 60 years, Coach Slay is probably best known for his time as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Emporia State University (ESU), wherein over 28 seasons he amassed 465 wins, received NAIA national coach of the year honors in 1986, and was a 6-time NAIA District 10 Coach of the year.
Coach Slay is well-known for his high energy, positive attitude, caring personality, and a great sense of humor. He retired from ESU in 1998 and spent the next 17 years officiating youth sports and fulfilling a variety of speaking engagements including graduation ceremonies, athletic banquets, school assemblies, and service organizations. In 2014 he accepted the position of head girls’ basketball coach at Chase County High School (KS). In the past five seasons, he led the Bulldogs to two state tournament appearances.
A veteran of the US Army, Slaymaker also represented the United States as an Assistant Coach in the World University Games under Mike Krzyzewski, served on the USA Games Committee for 6 years, and the Olympic Selection Committee in 1992.
As a student-athlete, Slaymaker led the nation in free throw percentage (90.9%) during the 1959-60 season. He is a member of (4) different hall of fames including the NAIA Hall of Fame, Kansas Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, and the Emporia State University Hall of Honor. In 2013, ESU named the basketball court in his honor.
Slaymaker has a doctorate in Physical Education/Psychology from the University of Arkansas and he earned a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in Education from the Kansas State Teacher’s College.
