Athletic Administration: What Do You Want to Do?  How Are You Going to Get There?

Gary Picone

Retired - Athletic Director

Lewis-Clark State College (ID)

About Gary:

Gary Picone is in his eighth year of his second term as Lewis-Clark State College’s athletic director, and 17th year overall in the position.  In 2011, his first year as LCSC’s baseball coach following the retirement of legendary coach Ed Cheff, Gary led the team to a 38-17 record and was named the NAIA West Region’s Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. He also received Athletic Director of the Year honors from the NAIA in 2010.

Since Gary’s first joining the athletic department as director in 1991, he has helped the Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series continue to grow in popularity, and the event has regularly set all-time attendance records under Picone’s stewardship.  In 2012, he relinquished the role of Tournament Director to Associate Athletic Director Brooke Cushman.

Gary first appeared at LCSC as an outfielder under coach Ramon Hooker in 1972. After a three-year career with the Warriors, he joined the coaching staff and helped mentor the 1976 team that was the first to qualify for the NAIA World Series.  After three-year hiatus from LCSC, Gary returned in 1983 as the Warriors’ pitching coach, staying until he was named executive director of the British Columbia Amateur Baseball Association in 1989.

In his first stint as athletic director from 1991-2000, Gary helped bring the NAIA World Series back to Lewiston in 1999, and along with Brooke Cushman, led a bid effort that secured the Series at Harris Field through 2015.  Gary’s second term as athletic director, beginning in 2006, saw several notable improvements to Harris Field, including stadium seating, a new press box, a new lighting system and an overhauled sound system in 2013.  Gary and his wife Terri have three children, Nina, Rico and Maria, and two grand-children, Marissa and Grady.
