Reflections

“Overall I enjoyed his lecture he challenged us to think more about what exactly you’re passionate about and it helped me to put more thought into what I want to do after college.  He finished by saying the best thing about coaching to him is ‘watching young talented players grow and get better and to be apart of building their responsibilities to transfer over to the real world.’  For me as a student-athlete I know first hand for this to be true.”

“I needed to know this information and I was very interested in what he had to say.  I liked the openness of questions throughout the lecture and how he gave advice and also real life experience to answer the questions.”

Keys to Building a Successful Coaching Career in Collegiate Athletics

Brad Frederick

Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

University of North Carolina

About Brad:

Brad Frederick completed his fifth season on Roy Williams’ staff at Carolina and his first as assistant coach in 2017-18. During his five years on staff, Carolina has won the 2017 National Championship, been to two Final Fours, won the ACC regular season twice, and won the ACC tournament championship once.

Frederick served as director of operations for four years upon joining the Tar Heel staff in 2013 after 14 seasons on Kevin Stalling’s staff at Vanderbilt.

As a player, Frederick joined the UNC varsity team as a sophomore in Dean Smith’s final season as head coach and also played two years under head coach Bill Guthridge. The Tar Heels went 86-21 in those three seasons. He played in 70 games and was part of UNC teams that won the 1997 and 1998 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament titles and NCAA East Regionals and reached two Final Fours. Frederick played on Tar Heel teams that featured future NBA standouts Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison. He was one of three seniors in 1999 along with Ademola Okulaja and Scott Williams.

Frederick began his coaching career in 2000 at Vanderbilt when Kevin Stallings became the Commodores’ head coach and remained on Stallings’ staff for the next 14 seasons. During his final season at Vanderbilt, Frederick held the longest tenure of any assistant coach in the Southeastern Conference.

Frederick is married to the former Jocelyn Isenburg. They have two sons, Benjamin and Sawyer, and a daughter, Carson. Brad’s father, the late Dr. Bob Frederick, was the athletic director at Kansas for 14 years and served as chair of the NCAA Division I Basketball Committee.

Three Keys to Building a Career in Collegiate Athletics

  1. Work with as many coaches as possible through summer camps, clinics, etc. to develop a network of coaches.

  2. Take any position with a proven, successful program regardless of level to get your foot in the door.

  3. Prove your worth by doing any and everything you can to help that program succeed no matter how small or trivial it seems.

"Regardless of what your initial position is, you will have an opportunity to be exposed to everything involved with running a college program. Working hard and proving yourself to be a valuable addition to the staff will allow you to advance in the profession."
